My felted vessels or ‘pods’ are made from wool grown on Uist crofts. When I work with a fleece, the material and process dictate the form. Most of my large vessels, up to 600 mm high, are wet felted and often formed around found objects such as old buoys.
I like to work in families. The boulder series were resist-felted using blended Hebridean and Blackface fleece.
I like to experiment with combining wild mosses, grasses and flowers in my work. Flag iris and sea pinks, fluffy seed heads from bog cotton and peat-loving plants from the moor are my favourites. The natural colours are of the place and feel ‘right’. I am also learning to dye fleece with Scottish lichen, known as ‘crottal’.
I make memorial vessels to celebrate life, past and present. These works used yarn-over from Harris weavers celebrating land…
and sea.
Vessels can also be for keeping treasures and collections safe.
Prices for vessels start at £65.00 and examples can be seen here. I welcome bespoke commissions. Please email me on rebecca@rebeccacottonstudio.com or fill in the contact form.
