Description
‘MacSprout- Keeper of the Corncrackers’ is a children’s picture book, bursting with engaging, humorous information about the relationship between nature and a very special Scottish working landscape as seen through the eyes of a dog. The book explores values of friendship, community and the love between MacSprout and his ‘owner’, Wee Boss. It’s a story of new beginnings and resilience.
The beautiful watercolour and collage illustrations by Rebecca, evoke the Outer Hebridean machair landscapes and it’s wildlife. They are taken from her sketch books kept over ten years while living and working on Island.
The book is a self-published, locally printed in Scotland, limited second edition. It will appeal to early readers upward and their adults and is supported by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
“I absolutely love your book – everything that set me up for life, wildness, the Hebrides, the sea, white beaches, and more recently discovered loves – being kept awake by the corncrake, and most of all DOGS!” – Sarah Raven
“How lovely he is! … It made me long for the machair and all those long beautiful (summer) Hebridean evenings.” – Adam Nicholson

Your book is an absolute delight. It all fits together beautifully….the words and drawings flowing together. We read it out loud to each other and ended in floods of tears. It has so much love in it. What more can one say!

MacSprout, Keeper of the Corncrackers is just the most beautiful story told by Sprout. It made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes. He was an exceptional dog, living in an exceptional place, experiencing exceptional sniffs and sights. Your drawings are so in keeping with Uist; they are hauntingly beautiful and wild.
